  1. The valve won't stop flow in this direction. It's meant to stop flow in the other direction.
  2. Like I mentioned in my previous post, the OEM filters from my dealer do not have an ADV. Just to be clear, the anti-drainback valve is merely a neoprene flap that's deflected by oil flow when the engine's running, and falls back into place when there's no oil pressure to keep the oil from draining from the filter. Are you guys talking about the bypass valve, perhaps?
  3. But an automatic _has_ gears (kick-rump roast planetary gearsets, at that!) The MPT isn't any more a differential than your manual transmission's clutch is a differential.
  4. The OEM filter for my USDM 2002 Legacy is identical to the 14460, save for the shape of the gasket. OEM has a round cross section, while the 14460 has a rectangular cross section. Neither have an ADV. There's no need...the filter mounts vertically (with the open side pointing upward).
  5. In the US, it's not about saving US$.05 on a part. It's about increasing the fuel economy by .01 mi/gal (thanks to CAFE). That's why some cars are shipping with (and the owner's manual is recommending the use of) 5W20!
  6. Use the recommended fuel. If you use a fuel with a lower-than-recommended AKI, the ECU will "hear" knock (thanks to the knock sensor) and retard ignition timing and/or reduce boost. Power output and fuel economy will suffer. What's the point?
  7. I think one would be safe "ripping on" the Phase-I EJ25. Remember, a Subaru is a _car_, not a religion
  8. True, however I used the exact same pump for the "before" and "after" fill-ups.
  9. According to an email I received from Mobil1 "tech support", all Mobil1 motor oils contain VI improvers. I was once told that the 10w30 did not, but all others did. Who knows?
  10. I only use the 15w50 during the summer months. In the winter, I run Mobil1 10w30. My EJ25 runs terribly on 87-AKI gasoline, even after a Seafoam treatment (removes carbon from the valves and combustion chamber). Tipping the throttle results in much bogging. Remember, the Phase-II EJ25 has a compression ratio of 10:1. Seems a bit high for 87-AKI gasoline.
  11. My USDM 2002 Legacy GT (5MT) burned 8.445 US gal. of Mobil premium unleaded in 270.1 miles of 72 mi/h driving. That's almost 32 mi/gal! I might add that the crankcase is filled with Mobil1 15w50!
  12. You probably don't need to lift the front end to change the oil (I don't lift my '02 Legacy for oil changes). If you do need to raise the front end, place the jack beneath the front crossmember. When raising the rear end, place the jack beneath the differential case.
  13. The Honda's FWD, so doesn't it use cables to link the gearshift to the shift forks? That would account for the smoothness.
  14. Can someone post results from dyno. runs with stock and K&N air filters? I'd like to see the difference.
  15. Do you want the docs for the '99 pertaining to the heads and rear main seal? Do you know if the 2.5 changed between '98 and '99?
  16. Don't trust Haynes. Spend the US$20 and a bit of time to download the FSM and TSB's (and whatever else you want...you have 72h to download) from techinfo.subaru.com/. I have the FSM for the '99 Leg. Let me know if you want me to email the relevant sections.
  17. Tell us more about the project. I'm guessing it's a mid-engine rear-drive kit car of some sort. Why else would you want a FWD trans.?
