Manual Trans into a 2000-2004 Outback H6?

Featured Replies

Has anyone ever seen a 5 or 6 speed manual trans put into a 3.0 6 cylinder Outback?

I've been wanting to pick up a 3.0 but I don't like manual transmissions much.

I'm sure it would bolt up and the rear diffs could be swapped but I don't know how it would handle the extra torque and the ECU changes.

Larry,

If you can figure out the push/pull clutch type, get an '05-08-ish Legacy GT/FXT/OBXT 5-speed.

They sit behind turbocharged 2.5's and can handle the 3.0, I'd bet.

I've seen them for <$1K.

Edit: The '97-99 5-speeds in the '97-99 Subies w/2.5 are also rumored to be capable of handling 300HP. I was running 250WHP on my turbo'd Forester and it's still fine.....been there done that one. The GT/Forester's 5th gear is slightly better for MPG (2800 RPM @ 70 in my '98 Foz) vs. the OB - (IIRC I was @ 3100 RPM @ 70).

Td

(note: No, I've not done the 5 or 6-speed behind the 3.0 myself, so I'm out of compliance w/the new Sticky @ the top - which I do agree w/BTW.)

It would be an neat setup.

I had the only dodge carvan with a 3.0 6 cylinder 5 speed for a long time.

The 6 caravan never came with a 5 speed but the dodge sedan did. It was pretty much a direct bolt in with a few welds for the trans support and shifter.

I'm thinking the Subaru would be easy. I need a good CHEAP 3.0 with a bad transmission to check it out.

4eat handles offroad better.. why do it unless you were gonna do the engine up all performance enhanced. The 220hp~ of a OB just doesn't seem like it needs a 5spd, or a d/r. No stalling on hill climbs with the auto, so i'll take it.

they bolt right up so swap away. folks have EZ swapped other subaru's so bolting the trans up shouldn't be an issue. kingbobdole (phil) has one in his XT6 with a manual trans (FWD even!) and there are others.

if the H6 ends up being a VDC model you are unlikely to be able to retain that feature since it's integrated with the AT.

i doubt you'll have transmission issues unless you're really tearing it up. for average daily driver i'd swap a manual trans into an H6 any day if i wanted one and not worry about it because i don't really drive them that way. if i were constantly laying into it working it, i'd start to lean towards beefier trans and clutches.
