help me identify the noise!

Featured Replies

hello everyone,

Recently my driver side front wheel area has been making a metal on metal contact noise (not a grinding but more of a slight squealing). the noise occurs when I am braking or when I am turning left. any thoughts on the cause would be appreciated.

car is a 1991 4wd loyale wagon.

Axle could be dry and worn?

Suspension worn out and causing squeeking sound.

Tie rod ends and bushings?

Jack your front end up and take the tire off, get in there with a bright light and start noising around and look for anything obvious. Maybe just do a simple new bearing and repack everything with grease and brake cleaner on metal components.

On your brake pads you have a squealer. Check that. Jack the car up and turn the wheels and spin them and see if you can pin point.

I just yesterday found the little squeak on mine and located what I believe to be a worn out rotor. It just squeaks when turning a little like on a curvy road when the weight shifts. The bearings are(/were) good but the previous owner didn't tighten the castle nut enough allowing the rotor to move and wear out on the axle. I haven't disassembled the whole thing to find any axle wear yet but I won't be surprised if I find some. I had shaken this thing out like five times and couldn't find anything but yesterday I guess was my...lucky(?)..day.
