96 OutBack Mass Airflow Sensor

Featured Replies

The Outback is a 2.2 5 speed Legacy wagon with 172K on it and it is throwing a code of P0106 which is the Mass Airflow Sensor code and I have been given 2 used sensors to try. One is from a Legacy and the other is from a Impreza. Both were 2.2 motors. Niether car is running at the moment. Is there a way to test these before I install or should I just squirt them with a little electronics cleaner, install, clear the code and go for a ride and hope for the best? The motor in my Legacy has just been tuned, new water pump and valve cover gaskets along with all filters changed.

Thanks, Mark

i don't know why but they sell specific cleaner for MAF's.

they very rarely fail so I would just install one of the other ones and see what happens. imp/legacy share tons of parts, so probably the same.

Thanks all, I'll give it a go tonight at my friends shop. If it throws the code again at least I can clear it right away and start again.

The JECS 22680AA160 and AUTECS 22680A160F are interchangeble and used on the USDM NA Legacy/Impreza/Forester- 2.2 and 2.5 - from '89-98 ('99 for the Legacy).

I have used them both on my cars successfully.

I've read the MAF-specific cleaner isn't as harsh and is a lower pressure spray??? So it doesn't damage the element, I'd guess?

Think we have found the problem, bad Mass Air sensor and a broken vacum line to the Map sensor. I'll find out tonight when we clear the codes again.
