HELP!! My belts were commin off for no apparent reason, well in the process of putting the belts back on i found that my woodruff key had broken off and wallowed out the crank pulley. ok so now i've replaced the key, pulley,and harmonic balancer. i then found i was leakin oil from the front crank seal and replaced it as well. ive only put 1 qt of oil back in so far and during this whole ordeal ive only tried to start it here after puttin that quart of oil in just to check the timing and for any new leaks. its turnin over but not firing. im stumped from here and only ideas i got are maybe need fill oil up rest of the way? PLZ HELP! Any suggestion appreciated!

The oil put in has no bearing on a no start.

Make sure the crank position sensor is plugged in. (It's the sensor directly over top of the crank sprocket). Make sure there is no metal stuck to the sensor face. The sensor is magnetic and anything metal stuck to the face of the sensor will cause it to not read correctly.

 

Which marks did you use to set timing?

 

Did you drain the oil from the engine before or during the work?

oil was lost during replacement of seal. would it be possible for the sensor to have been damaged when the crankshaft was heated up to shrink the warped n broken woodruff key so the sproket could be removed? the heat was applied only sparingly and not on the sensor.

Fill the oil so you don't trash the engine. It's not part of your not starting problem, which is timing most likely.

If you had to remove the timing belt, i would suspect it is aligned wrong. Use the hashes, and not the arrows.

 

There are several marks on the crank sprocket, but the one with the dot is the one to use.

 

Subaru belts are atypical of other makes as the TDC mark is not used for alignment, but rather a mark that represents all of the cylindrs are at the center of their stroke at the same time

The stupid timing marks confused me on my first tbelt job too... You won't be alone.

That should not be enough to matter, as long as the level is correct on the dipstick.

 

The engine is probably just out of time. You'll need to remove the timing belt and reset the crank and cam positions using the proper marks as shown in the diagram John posted.

Thx All for all the advice, i'm about to head out to double check the timing marks and the sensor for anything stuck to it. i wish that i could see the diagram that ya'll posted for me but i'm workin on the beast beside the road and my internet accecc is limited to my cell phone and the picture wont get big enough for me to see anything but little dots lol

You want the timing mark on the crank gear rear tooth, it's a vertical line. Do NOT use the arrow on the front of the gear.

 

You can often see the timing marks on the belt. It will have 3 lines across it, Cam, Crank, Cam marks.

 

Otherwise the cams line up on the slot in the rear timing cover marks and the crank gear lines up with the dash mark on the oil pump cover.

I have a related question regarding the timing marks. I recently replaced the head gaskets on my 91 legacy and I'm having the same issues with a lack of spark. Are the timing marks the same for a 91? I will admit to being a newbie to subarus, I've been a diesel and or Detroit engine mechanic for many years, but I'm not having much luck with this engine. thanks
