I've got a bit of an odd request. I just purchased a Lotus 7 replica, and it uses a Subaru steering wheel of some sort. I need help identifying what year/model this may have come from, as I'd like to replace the wheel w/ an aftermarket detachable one for ease of entry/exit. I looked at a few threads on here, and it appears there are a couple of different Momo adapters available, but they are different for the different years.

My '88 3dr had one of those wheels.

had the same wheel in my 86 rx sedan.

 

i think the 86 gl-10 had that wheel as well. my 87 has a differrent wheel in it.

Ok, so any idea which 'generation' this would be as it relates to this thread on steering wheel adapters?

1985-86 gl steering wheel. The caar it comes from is the same as any 85-94 l series, loyale, dl/gl/rx/gl10

+1 its in my 86 GL sedan.

 

Ill swap mine out someday, I dont like it.

Ok, stupid question then, is there a difference in splines between the different years that make the adapters different? As this isn't in the original car, I couldn't care less if the wheel position is the same forward/back as it was stock.

MilesFox I believe said that it was the same.

 

I would think it was the same via that thread. GeneralDisorder said the EA81 and EA82 wheel splines are completely different. Didnt say that certain years of the EA82 wheel wouldnt fit other EA82s, so I believe the "7302" (which from said thread seems to be very difficult to find) it should fit.

 

Is that whole steering column from an EA82 or does it look modified-to-fit sorta deal?

hi, what you have is from the 85-89 series GL, GL-10, loyale, both sedans and wagons, also fits the 3-dr coupe . it has a unique to this series spline and also a taper below the splines and it requires a puller to remove the wheel.

the earlier 80-84 series , cars , wagons and brats have a different spline and no taper , no need for a puller to take the wheel off. it does not fit on the one you have.

the later impreza and legacy models have a different spline also.

The bottom line is the hub adapter you need for your column is Very hard to find! there is some available in australia online , there have been several threads on this in the search , i have been looking for them here a long time off and on but never found one . the ausi price is like 60 + shipping so not cheap but they did have them. the column you have is called the L series there , just say 87 station wagon.

i think the company name was Saas boss hub adapters. do a search here for threads and online for the parts.

i just made the adapter for my mine out of the stock wheel, it is just a flat bit of steel under the padding, just cut off the tubes that are welded to it to connect the wheel part to it and make that into the adapter

Hmm, I was able to get ahold of the guy that built it, he said he didn't remember the exact year, but thought it was an early nineties wagon.

 

I did a little messing around with it last night, I pulled off the horn cover, and you are correct, it's threaded to use a puller to remove it. I found my puller & it came off fairly easy. I think I may go the route that subyrally did and cut up a stock wheel to make the adapter. Now to find a cheap, stock wheel to cut up.

I have this wheel in my GL. Bratman gave it to me because someone gave it to him... It fit without any mods (besides making a friction ring for the horn)

I dunno what suby it's off, but someone should know. If I ended up with one in Maine, I'm sure there are many more kicking around somewhere you could snatch up.

I think I've got a workable solution in the works. I'm buying a steering wheel from another member on here and will use that to cut up and make an adapter for a new, smaller, aftermarket wheel. Thanks for the help in identifying it so far.

Oh, it is. Stupid fun even. With the R1 engine and the way it's geared, I can hit 62 in 2nd right as the rev limit kicks in at ~12k rpm. I'm hoping to make it throught the summer with my license.

It's a Lotus 7 replica. This one was hand-built by a guy in MD & I bought it from the 2nd owner in VA. I've wanted to build one for ages, but haven't had time/space/money. I now have space & some money, but not time w/ the addition of my new son 9 mo ago, so I jumped at the opportunity to buy this one. It's not perfect, but it was a good platform to start from.

 

Most of the kits are either Caterham, Westfield, or Birkin. All are quite a bit pricier than what I'm into this one for.

Yeah, essentially the same thing. There are a lot of cars that pay homage to the original Lotus 7, including kit cars and homebuilts. A grill is on my list of things to get around too, and I will probably go w/ the all-too-common 7 on it.
