Hey all i was just adventuring to rebuild/ clean the hitachi carburetor on my 79 BRAT , after putting it all back together and installing it my engine now runs SUPER rich(plenty of white gas smelling smoke out the tail pipe), doesn't sound right and won't idle.....

 

I know it's not much to go on but any help would be welcome please!!

Did you adjust any screws? turn them all the way in to lean it out

 

If you replaced or checked any diaphragms you may have cut or torn one.

 

forget to put any jets back in?

It won't idle? Did you re plug-in the anti-dieseling connection? It's the single wire coming off of the driver's side of the hitachi carburetor. I had a similar experience before I swapped to a weber - the bullet connector for that connection wasn't pushed in all the way.

Turning the Fuel/air miture screw didn't change anything.

 

Pulled a couple jets out but put them all right back

 

Really all i did was pull it apart and change gaskets.

 

I did have a question about the anti-diesel vale though. to check it do i need to pull the whole brass nut out or does the wire on it pull out? I originally thought it did but it doesn't budge with any sort of wiggling.

Anti diesel valve just shuts off the fuel vapor when the car shuts off.

 

These carbs ther eis never just a simple "gasket replacement" I have been there and there is no such thing.

 

ADjusting the idle mix screw does nothing means the carb is dumping fuel. I would suggest a stuck float.

The anti-dieseling valve is energized when the vehicle is turned on - which means that it is pulled open. If the wire is not connected then the valve is closed and will cause the car to idle erratically and die. There should be a bullet connector about 1 foot from the carb or so. You do not need to remove the valve from the carb - just disconnect/reconnect the wire to it...

 

That being said, the fact that you think it is running very rich would indicate something like a stuck float. It's kinda hard to do but check the sight glass - the fuel level should be very close to the middle.

Either:

Have someone else turn the car on while you (carefully) observe the throat of the carb. If the float is stuck (most likely) it should be dumping fuel .

Or:

If you look at the intake manifold with the car off and see a puddle of fuel. again, the float is stuck.

 

Did you check the float height before putting the carb back together?

Did you check the float valve for function. This is actually a common mistake for someone not used to how touchy some floats can be.

Thanks for the help guy.

 

Before installing the Carb i had check height and function, but looking back i noticed that the bowl was not filling up (gas was barely sitting in the bottom of the glass circle).

 

Interestingly enough i was workign on this with a friend and he felt so bad (and stumped) that the next day he went out and bought me a new carb, which i was grateful for, but kinda sad cuz i was looking forward to the challenge of trouble shooting.

 

So now i've got a car that's sitting around waiting for a new carb to show up.. hopefully i can intall it with no issues.
