July 11, 201114 yr didn't find much about popping out of gear on here - only about 3 threads out of 285 in a search for "gear". friends 97 legacy pops out of a gear (3rd or 4th) at specific times - i think like when loading or unloading it (accel or hills). bushings and stuff are probably a long shot? more likely something internal? will this quickly escalate to something worse? fluid change isn't likely to help?
July 11, 201114 yr Often this is related to mount issues - either transmission mounts or pitching stopper, etc. Check that stuff (easy stuff) before assuming the transmission itself has a problem. Loading and unloading can cause mushy or torn mounts to allow the transmission to move relative to the body.... being that the linkage is attached to the transmission and the body.... you can see where this goes . July 11, 201114 yr Syncro issue. Will continue to get worse. Bushing issues would be like the old EA's that wouldn't go into gear. EJ bushings do not get that bad!
July 11, 201114 yr Yes - if it's not a mount issue then the next step is the syncro's or the little spring loaded keeper's found under them that "snap" them into and out of gear.... not a problem that is economically fixed as the main and pinion shafts have to be completely dissasembled to get at most of the syncro's.
