Suspension Question

Featured Replies

Have a legacy with agx adjustable struts and some type of serious lowering springs on it. I've owned lowered cars before, and don't really find it necessary for my daily driver. I would like to set the car up to be a decent performer on loose surface such as dirt, snow, etc. I have done some research and found out that running the AGX shocks with the stock springs won't bring up any issues but I would like to know if anyone has tried this setup and if they could tell me anything about what the handling characteristics are like as far as body roll, bump absorption, understeer/oversteer, etc. Going back to stock ride height just seems like a good idea here in MN.

Or if anyone just has some input on what they THINK the suspension setup will do, id appreciate that as well.

if you currently own it - how do you not know how it performs? or are you wondering how a standard suspension compares?

i've never driven a stock legacy that i didn't like how it performs except the lower end models like L and brightons, but that's probably due to lack of or small sway bar.

i drive lots of snow, mountains, and gravel/rough roads every day, and really like how all of my legacy's perform - i have 2 current daily drivers - a 99 SUS and 96 LSi - both handle really well for me on stock suspension.

my OBW tends to roll a good bit and i like it less than the legacy sedans for the twisty mountain roads i drive everyday. but at 180,000 i haven't decided if it's the original struts or wagon causing it.

speaking on experience, i had a 92 legacy sport i bought it had kyb agx and eibach sport springs. Handled like a go cart, but was WAY too stiff and harsh for daily driving, a bumpy road about caused neck pain. thing was horrible, my parents could not even ride in it a short distance it was that bad.

yanked them off and sold them, put on some legacy gt springs/shocks. Great ride and handling returned. The person i sold it to said it was the best riding car he had driven.

I feel that the KYB AGX might be an "upgrade" over the stock shocks.

As for lowering springs, yeah, going back to stock is the best options. Whenever rally teams set up their rally cars for gravel and dirt, you will find that hardly any of them use a low ride-height. In fact, sometimes, the gravel setup has a higher ride-height than its production car counterparts.

So yes, stock springs with KYB AGX shocks sounds like a good plan for improved off-pavement handling.

Alright thx guys, that will be the route i take then. I've always been kinda annoyed at the idea of putting a suby so low to the ground...can't really beat the elements when ur scrapping the pavement...and they don't need them the stock suspension on my brothers impreza along with the awd it gripped ten times better than anything id ever driven.
