Re gearing 88 gl 5spd trans and rear Diff.

What are the lowest gears you can put in a 5spd DR trans and diff. Was looking at Justy final gearing was 4.43 and 5.20 with 4wd. Could this be an option for running larger tires on lifted GL's. Which Subaru gears work in a DR trans. 4.40 or 5.20 would make an awesome little rock crawler out of a lifted GL. Comments??

Final gearing is the gears in the diffs. I believe 1.59 is the lowest low range you can get, but somebody on here put 4.11 final drives in with a lot of welding and machining. If you really want to lower your gears, get a tranfercase.

 

How big are you planning on going? I'm running 30x9.50's on my GL, and it does fine on and off road. I can also roast tires in 2lo and right now its my DD

 

A 5.20 final would be sweet, but axles would probably explode if you got on it..

El Presidente, are you running a 1.8 or a 2.2? I was thinking about 29" but may go for a true 27" tires. Got a small dirt bike / single Snowmobile trailer I as like to tow locally. Thought the extra final drive would help out. Trying to do a 2" lift before the snow flies here. Currently running a 1.8 but did get my hands on a 2.5 JMD motor only. Looking around at JY's for harness, ecu, ect. Was thinking about some Delta Torx Cams until I can get everything together for the EJ conversion.

Im running a EA82 1.8L, and my 30x9.50's measure out to JUST under 29".

 

I know the 2.5's on the state side, had/have problems with head gaskets among other things(they have a reputation as being a POS), thats why everyone installs 1st generation EJ 2.2's instead. They produce twice as much power(hp and torque) as the EA82, and have half the problems. From what I have read the only two wise moves are: delta cams or an EJ22 swap(not an EJ2.5)...I'm doing the EJ22 hopefully soon.

The deepest subaru manual gears go is 4.44. 2004 Forester XT turbos have them, among other newer outback turbos. You can order the front ring and pinion for $350 from Subaru. Loads of automatic subarus had 4.44, so the rear diffs are easy to come by in the junkyard.

 

The problem with the 4.44 pinion is that it's an AWD pinion, and a separate piece from the countershaft in the transmission. So you need to hack it up and weld it to make it work in a 4x4 transmission.

 

You also need to grind the 4.44 ring to clear the 1.54 low range reduction gears in the 4x4 transmission. It's a fair bit of custom work.

 

Nothing from a Justy transmission fits any other subaru.

Thanks for the input... I think I will just go with the Delta Cams / lift for now. Maybe I'll sell the JDM to pay for everything!

Concur with above - and that's why we are all going to the Toyota transmission using a bell-housing adaptor. :)
