When manifolds go bad!

Featured Replies

Here's the newest situation in my Sube's odyssey:

Went to repair a leak in the exhaust system today using one of those tape-and-resin cheapie kits (pin holes around the front hanger plate) and also to get a look-see at a minor bit of leakage at the Y pipe. After removing the heat shield for that (well....destroying it off, damn bolts) and loosening the manifold bolts.........

the left side manifold pipe had cracked all the way round where it meets the Y pipe junction and I now had a two-piece Y pipe

Question is, where would I get another Y pipe? They don't seem to be available anywhere I looked online. I'm assuming everyone just goes and grabs one out of the pull'n'pay? Welding is out, looks as if it had been re-welded once before this. She'll be okay for the time being, I wrapped the ************ out of the break with the kit and used ALL the resin on it, and it seems alright (no more puffing from that location), will hit the original leak further down the piping tomorrow.

On my GL I had one custom made. The exhaust shop in town ordered a 2 input, 1 output universal cat and bent up tubing to make it look pretty similar to a stock y pipe.

That's what I did as well. Lucky for me my dad runs a small exhaust shop :) they are pretty easy to bend and flanges are pretty standard as well from what I remember (or if yours are still good you can cut them off and use them). I used an f-150 cat on my ea81 (Two in, one out) came out very well, sounds great too

That's a common crack - just weld it back together. I've fixed half a dozen of them on EA's and EJ's. The crack generally isn't from rust - it's just from vibration and from the weld joint being brittle.

This is on an spfi EA82, the dual port leggie manifold wont work. But thanks for the offer.

go to ebay, put in your year/make/model and catalytic converter and you'll find what your looking for. i had to do this for my 87 GL carb, searched 1987 Subaru GL and found it right on the first page. i would just try to weld it like GD said though, cause those direct fit replacements are pretty pricey.
