Engine removal..

Featured Replies

Just about to remove the motor from my 95 Legacy 2.2/manual trans. Should I remove motor mounts from the cross-member or remove the bolt from the bottom of the motor? The lower motor to tranny bolts have nuts on them..i removed the nuts..will these bolts slide through when I take some weight of the engine?

I always remove the x-member bolts theres only one per side.

And once the engine is high enough to clear the x-member, pull it forward.

The lower studs come out of the bellhousing.

you can lift the engine and trans together with the engine hoist, or jack them both up together from below with a jack and a large block of wood. but which ever you choose. the trans has to be supported before you can pull the engine forward.

undo the nuts under the crossmember. remove the bolt on the pitch stopper on top of the motor.

place a jack under the trans, and you can lift up the engine several inches.

the engine is much easier to pull than what is to be expected based on other car layouts.

Does the pitch stopper need to be unbolted if Im just pulling the engine? Looks like its bolted to the tranny.

YES - actually you can usually get the engine out with it attached, but not in.

Just remove the bolt at the end/trans end.

Thanks for the tips..hope to finish it up this weekend.

i looked at a parts car recently with the engine removed. and the doge bone had a zigzag shape to it. it was one with the metal rod, not the one shaped like a dog bone. some dummy either didn't have the time to undo it or didn't know.

remove the lower bolt and lift away.

i like to remove the pitch bar, and re-use the bolt to secure my chain. secure the other end of the chain to the alternator bracket.
