November 13, 201114 yr I am tearing down 2 engines. My current engine (ran great and cool) is not the original. I am rebuilding the original 1985 EA81 and found that the water channels cast into the block where the water pump mounts up is very shallow compared to the block I just took out of the brat (from an 84 or older). Has anyone seen this before... is this normal? I just want to be sure. 1985 EA81 (original engine that I want to rebuild). 1984 or older EA81... just took out of the Brat, ran great and cool. ...Teach me Yodas Edited November 13, 201114 yr by tundrabrat
November 13, 201114 yr Just a minor casting difference between hydro and solid lifter engine blocks. Doesn't affect the water pump's ability to cool. Don't worry about it. GD
November 13, 201114 yr Interesting. I will say that the original EA81 in my '84 GL has the deeper channels.
November 13, 201114 yr Just a minor casting difference between hydro and solid lifter engine blocks. So the hydro blocks would have the shallow casting?
November 13, 201114 yr That's what I've seen, yes. The hydro block is a completely different casting - so the lifters can be removed without splitting the block.... and some of the bolt bosses are different to acomidate the turbo accesory mounts..... GD

GD Good to know... Those lifters were definitely trying to escape during disassembly. This gives me piece of mind... Thanks GD Edited November 13, 201114 yr by tundrabrat
