March 16, 200422 yr I Found a 1992 Legacy Turbo. Its a 5spd AWD and it has a bad clutch. How difficult would it be to replace the cluch on these things? I'm used to smaller engines like the Subaru EA81 and the 8.5" clutches they use. How much larger are these clutches? and how much harder is it to replace them? Would it be easier to drop the transmission or lift the engine? -Brian

There's more work involved to get access to the clutch due to the AWD, however. How high can you lift the car? This will determine whether it's easier to drop the trans. or pull the engine. If you can raise the car a few feet off the ground, I'd drop the trans. It'll be faster than removing and reinstalling the engine plumbing/electricals (which may be more complicated than those of my naturally-aspirated engine).
March 16, 200422 yr Author Thats what I was thinking, all the elec and turbo crap is more than im used to. Ive done clutches on older sube's, but never on a EJ. I doubt i could get the front of the car a few feet into the air. Im thinking maybe 18" to 24" is the highest i can get the frame up, and supported. -Brian
March 16, 200422 yr Does it have air conditioning ? if it does it would be easier to remove the transmission, the only problem you might come across is releasing the exhaust nuts/bolts around the turbo due to the way they seize with the heat. DaveH
March 16, 200422 yr Author Yeah, it has AC. He also had the entire exhaust replaced so im sure the exhaust studs wont be too difficult to remove. -Brian
March 16, 200422 yr Just like the old gen models you can pull the air and PS pumps out of the way and get the engine out. You could also slide the motor 3-4 inches forward thanks to that.
March 18, 200422 yr All you really need to do is disconnect the exhaust, support the trans, remove the radiator, unbolt the motor mounts, hoist the motor and slide it front 3-4 inches. No need to disconnect fuel or electircal lines, etc.
