December 8, 201114 yr 1994 SS stock EJ22T. don't notice it if RPMs are up... but just off idle whether stopped or moving, the noise frequency increases with RPMs, but is not a consistent noise. seems to waver... 170k on stock engine and turbo (assuming it's original) clutch has been starting to slip occasionally. I'm hoping it's the turbo or the clutch, because both are going to be replaced shortly... TD04 (75k) sitting on the shelf waiting... any thoughts...
December 8, 201114 yr could be front pulley separating. My 94 wagon has that going on now too, fairly typical after being that old.
December 8, 201114 yr Not a subaru, but my van was doing the same thing. When i replaced the pully and the tensioner the noise went away. I replaced the belt at the same time as well.
December 8, 201114 yr or check AC compressor for vibration, the bearings in them go about this miles too....if so, cut the belt off. hope it is something easy.
December 8, 201114 yr tap, screech, knock, squeal? if you're saying "bad" it doesn't sound good, boo!? sounds like you're not leaning towards these but accessory belts/pulleys? removing both belts and cranking the motor rules out belts, pulleys, alt, p/s, a/c bearings.
December 8, 201114 yr Author when I first heard it, it reminded me of a fan motor going bad. labored. kind of a lower pitched, sputtery growl.... if that makes sense.... bad enough that I didn't feel like driving it for my work commute...
December 8, 201114 yr My folks have the big parts delivery and theres 2 hoses coming priority mail. Hope its the turbocharger or a timing belt idler which would be my two guesses.
December 9, 201114 yr Author No. Doesn't soind like that. It is accompanied by a vibration too that a can vaguely feel thru the shifter.
December 10, 201114 yr Author Driveshaft u joint or carrier bearing possibly. nope. does it while parked... but I'll verify... I got all my parts today for the clutch and axle swap... still need to get the items needed for the turbo swap though...
December 12, 201114 yr Author it's definitely in the front of the engine... haven't had a chance to see what exactly it is though...
December 29, 201114 yr Author AC Belt tensioner.... it was so toasty, you could hold it by the pulley with the bracket hanging down, and turn it, and the bracket would move with it, and hold at a 90 degree angle without any rotation!
