Quick Question on a 98 Engine tranplant

Featured Replies

I just picked up a 98 outback with a bad 2.5 motor. It is a 5 speed. I have a 2.2 nearby for the transplant, but it came form an automatic. Is that a problem or does the transplant 2.2 have to be a 5 speed?

I assume I can just plug the egr and the 98 5 speed won't be looking for that or am I wrong?

Thanks

You should be golden.

BOTH should have EGR. Easy enough to double check.

Don't forget you'll need the 2.2's Ypipe

Thanks Davebugs.

Hi,

Just to clarify as I don't see the year of the 2.2 listed....

The y-pipe is only needed on '96+ 2.2 as they were single-port exhaust. '95 EJ22 was also dual-port like the EJ25.

And for the EGR in your case it's a non-issue.

As far as I've read, ALL EJ25s - 5-speed and AT - have EGR. For the EJ22s it's hit-or-miss, but generally the ATs all do and some 5-speeds.

If your 2.2 did NOT have EGR you'd get a CEL and I don't think a work-around has been figured out other than tapping the head/exhaust and IM to 'make your own'. I've not read whether swapping ECUs from a non-EGR car would work to avoid the CEL?

BTW, your '98 OB's ECU will run the 2.2....no need to swap it out.

GL,

Td
