Ultimate Subaru Message Board

Recommended Posts

I bought my my91 legacy about a year ago. Got it for a steal with a stripped timing belt. Easy fix obviously. Now i have to replace 2 injectors and the canister purge valve and the o2 sensor. But here is where subie experience from this board is needed by this legacy learner. What seems to be the best ways to lower these first Gen legacys? I have heard accord springs and 4 runner struts also wrx combos but no years were really provided for me I'm looking for the optimum price and performance ratio. Sorry if this has been covered before just point me that way lol. I'm a noob to the usmb

My understanding, both the Accord springs and 4-Runner Struts are meant to lift the Older Subarus (80s)

As for lowering a first gen Legacy, pretty much any strut combo up to 2001 Impreza should work, I don't know if you are going to get much lower unless you run aftermarket setup. Anyway, from what I've seen, after 2001 the rear struts are different (Same goes for Legacy)

Anyone else have more info on this?

Thanks for the quick reply I was hoping maybe wrx struts would be my answer but that would be too easy now wouldn't it

If you can find mid 90s WRX struts, they might yield a little loss of height. :headbang:

Just use ratchet straps around the struts to compress them, that'll lower your stance! Ha.

Wrx struts won't lower it by themselves. I have kyb gr2 wrx struts in my 92 legacy with stock springs, and they lifted it if anything (my old struts were very worn) they also stiffened it up a lot which was very nice.

This is right after I swapped the struts, they have settled a bit more now.

I know a member on here used wrx kyb's with the wrx springs in their 91 legacy and it lowered it some but not a ton.

There are options out there, it really depends what you are looking for as far as far as how low you want to go.

i used 2002-2003 wrx kyb red struts and stock wrx springs, swapped the top hats on the rears, although, I need to relook at them because the struts make the bushings come loose in the top hats and knock like hell. I'm thinking making a spacer to take up the slack

They dropped my car around 1.5"

You can use GF/GC impreza struts or coil overs. BOLT IN 100%

here is my car before/after

handles like a MONSTER now though, even with the light knock from the rears. It took 3-5k miles to start knocking the rears.

I believe the switchover for impreza's was 05, I could be wrong but I am pretty damn sure that the 05 stuff wont fit my car but some 04 will...

but 02-03 does fit the hubs for sure. The top hats are different on the rears for 90-91 (93-01 prez and 90-91 legos have the same rear top hats) but are direct drop in for 92-94 and all 2nd gen lego's.

My roommate had these exact struts on his 95 postal RHD but sold them to me because he wanted more aggressive drop and bigger wheels. aka coilovers... too bad he put his stockies back on
