March 20, 201214 yr It seems there are a lot of "name that part" threads lately. I thought I knew everything haha. Then today I found a part and I don't know what it is. I figured we could have an ongoing thread for mystery parts as to reduce tons of random ones. Then all the elusive parts can be consolidated in one thread. Anyway, what the heck is this? It's bolted in the pass side rear wheel well of my 89GL sedan, it has three lines that go to the fuel tank. Is it some sort of vent? Will it blow up if I weld next to it? I have it unbolted and swung to the side here.
March 20, 201214 yr That's probably the charcoal canister for the evaporative emissions system. It traps the vapors from the gas tank (which in older cars would have been vented to the outside), and then sucks them in and burns them when the engine is running.
March 20, 201214 yr Author Evap canister is the black thingy under the hood. They didn't put it back there till 98 Legacy. Unless it has two canisters... It doesn't have any vac lines going to it from up front though.
March 20, 201214 yr Hmm... My 70's VWs had two canisters, so it might be possible that the Subarus did too. The VWs were always a mess... fuel lines going every which way, running the length of the car twice, etc, etc. Most people would pull the whole system out, because when all the hoses and lines went bad, it was a nightmare to track down where all the fuel fumes were coming from.
March 20, 201214 yr Looking at my Chilton's manual, I'm now thinking that it is the vapor separator, which apparently keeps gas from sloshing through the vent line and into the charcoal canister on hard stops or cornering.
March 20, 201214 yr It's vapor seperator. Takes the vapors from the tank and allows the fuel to drain back. It's tied into the loop of line just in front of the tank, and also helps the tank breath thru that 2-way valve in that loop.

I found it after I almost ground through one of the hard lines. haha.

So yesterday I had my car out in the driveway and I was welding new rear quarter panels in it. My mom walked past and noticed a fire in my trunk (burning paint). She freaked all out THERE'S FIRE IN YOUR CAR OH NOOOOOO!!BLAH BLAH BLAH. And, while still laying a bead down, I said in a calm voice "as long as the fire isn't too close to the banana dooker, it's fine". She was like ummm....ok. and walked away.
