Is this unacceptable fuel mileage?

Featured Replies

sounds about right to me...

1. don't compare mileage with a lighter car...

2. don't compare mileage with OR/WA folks :) I thought someone said their fuel was infused with O2 for better burning/emissions, but I don't know whats true with that... however every time I've driven out to WA for vacations, I always got better mileage out there as compared to back home in Iowa...

Ok... I need to brag a little bit :)

29.8 MPG on the highway at 65~75 mph. '99 OBW with a '95 EJ22. I put Seafoam in the tank before fueling (I think the injectors are leaky), and removed the roof crossbars.

Not bad for an auto :)

Did the exact same mpg with a 98 Outback wagon 2.5 auto going across Iowa and Nebraska about 5 years ago. That was with 3 adults in the car and our luggage. The faster we went the better MPG we got. Going across the rustbelt states we got mid 20's, the flatter-higher speedlimit western states we got high 20's.

Outback with the same transmission as my car is going to get better gas mileage. The engine has enough power to easily turn the bigger tires, so it's dropping your highway cruising speed. Therefor better gas mileage. I'm sure if I swapped a 4.11 auto in, it would do better.

But at that point why not just use that spare 5speed in the back of my garage :)

It's interesting... I have always thought this car runs too high in the RPM range for highway speeds, when compared with my other car (Saturn SL1, 1.9L 5 speed).

Given I get somewhat closer to 20 mpg in the city (and the car's best had been 26 or so highway), I couldn't be happier :) I still need to replace at least the knock sensor (the car is extremely dull at low RPMs), the spark wires and the O2 sensor... I hope the MPG will improve still a little bit.:drunk:

the DOHC has less low end power than a 2.2 does, IMO. But up in the high RPMs it really screams.

I don't agree with this. The ones I have have TONS of low end torque. That actually seems to be their strong point.

Hmm, I used to have a 96 2.2 and a 99 2.5DOHC both 5speed. And the 2.2 definitely took off faster. Seemed to have a lot more low end.

Add the 2.2 had 3.9 gears, 4.11 in the 2.5.
