I just finished replacing the head gaskets in my 97 Legacy Outback. Got everything back together and started the engine. The engine runs great but I am leaking coolant. I checked all the hoses and found one leak which was just a clamp that was not tight enough so i fixed that problem, and checked all the other clamps. It is dripping off the oil pan, but I can't track it down. I did have an oil leak from the pan, and a friend of mine removed the pan and resealed it for me when I had the engine out. I know I am not being very specific, but can anyone point me in a direction where I might start. I am not mechanic, but have tinkered w/ old VW engines for years, and have always done work on my cars, so you might have to dumb it down for me.

Could be a leaking water pump and the coolant is running out of the timing belt cover drain right under the crank pulley. That will run down the front of the oil pan.

 

A leak where the upper radiator hose attaches to the coolant crossover manifold will puddle under the power steering pump and then run down the front of the block and onto the oil pan.

Both times my Subarus leaked coolant it was the water pump, and it dripped off of and covered the oil pan.

Check the small coolant hoses on the IACV and Throttle Body.

 

When you removed and replaced the intake, it's easy to damage these so there is just a small pinhole that weeps and coolant runs down the side of the motor by the oil pan.

 

Depending on where it runs down, it also may follow the head and look like a leaking head gasket. A guy once told he had a leaky head gasket and was relieved to find out it was just a small coolant hose buried under the intake.

Water pump or thermostat gasket look strait up at waterpump from bottom and look for coolant coming from weep hole of water pump

also ontop of the thermostat housing and w/p dont rule out the tiny about 3" elbow hose attatched to the w/p. Seeing as these commonly leak s**t tons of oil and the engines end up turning black (like mine was and most I see around this generation) that oil soaks into the rubber hoses and turns them to mush. I had to replace lower radiator hose and that formed elbow due to that issue when i bought my car due to the mass amount of oil that was all over it.

maybe it is the o-ring on the water passage pipe.
