hub bearing questio

Featured Replies

went to order whole hub bearing already pressed in , all auto stores are seperate why ? 95 legacy l awd a/t rear

I'm blind.

The bearing has to be pressed into the knuckle and there is no way to do that with the hub already installed with this style of bearing. At least not as far as I know.

You would have to buy the whole knuckle. There is not a seperate bearing assembly that bolts in like some other designs.

You will need either a press or a hub tamer style tool set to install them. These cannot be done with a hammer and punch, etc.

I recently went through this same mess of ordering a bearing, and seals, and and got ready to install a new bearing with a hub tamer. This was just after doing this same work on the same bearing 6 months ago. Doing the bearing replacement is one tough, difficult, cussing time consuming job. Only now, I learned the hub/knuckle itself was bad, and I would have to order that part, and wait some more. Not wanting to waste more waiting time, I went to a wrecking yard, and bought a complete hub/knuckle for $75. A buddy installed it for me, and it works fine.

In the future, I will only replace complete hub/knuckle units, and never again screw around replacing a wheel bearing. It is just SO much easier!

I did look on Rockauto and saw there are a few companies that do sell bearings with the hub. I suppose there is some way to replace the bearing/hub together but unless the hub you have is damaged there is no need.

Either way, the bearing has to be pressed out of the knuckle, then the hub pressed out of the bearing. Take the whole knuckle, bearing, and hub to a shop and have them press the old bearing out and the new bearing in.

I replace bearings all the time - $150 installed including parts. But I have a hub tamer and I've done dozens of them. It's a pretty routine job at my shop.
