June 2, 201213 yr I have a 91 Subaru Legacy 2.2 non turbo. After replacing head gaskets , I am getting no spark.I took great care getting the timing belt exactly lined up as specified. According to the on board diagnostics, the cam position sensor was bad. I replaced it. The new one doesn't produce any better results. Any thoughts?

June 2, 201213 yr do the wires that go to the cam positioning sensor have power? you might have accidentally broke them when you replaced the head gasket.

June 2, 201213 yr check the cam position sensor (driver side head) and its wire that hooks below the throttle body, also, make sure you use the notch on the trigger wheel BEHIND the crank timing sprocket. If it's off time, the computer won't trigger spark.
June 2, 201213 yr If you haven't verified power is getting to the ignition system first you may waste a lot of time in hunting down the trouble. Whenever the ignition system isn't working, making sure power is getting to it is the first thing to check. Even though wires are intack it doesn't mean they are live.

The one on the drivers side is marked with an L, and has a few notches on the back that the cam sensor reads to determine fuel injection timing. Without the notches the ECU sees no signal from the cam sensor, you get no fire. The passenger "R" cam sprocket has no notches.

That was my bad, I foolishly thought that the "L" meant left as I was looking at the engine... THANKS!
June 7, 201213 yr Always keep in mind that parts marked with L or R will be referring to position based on sitting in the car. Are we to assume this fixed the problem and it now runs flawlessly?
