'91 Loyale 4WD sedan with the automatic transmission. Recently purchased for the GF. I've driven it a few times around town (25-45mph) and it runs and shifts smoothly. Earlier today I had it on the interstate, D drive, and it was about 4500rpm to go 65mph and when I would push it to 70 it was around 5000rpm. So does that seem normal? I'm use to a 5-speed manual and seems to me it should be shifting one more time? I would appreciate some feed back from those of you who drive a GL / Loyale with an auto tranny.

Or think of the fact that the national speed limit when the car was designed was 55.

 

They left you room to hit 70-75mph, but not to cruise there. My 84 4wd sedan has the same trans. Highway speed is 50-60, unless I want to burn alot of unecesary gas.

 

On the upside, If you drive 50mph in it everywhere, you get great milage:lol:

I do occasionally to pass, but then I slow down. My 84 sedan is the "classic" of my fleet, completely stock, and I'm trying to preserve it.

 

I'd swap for a 5spd if you need to drive 70-75 all the time.

I will advise her to take it slow. No, no real need to go 70 except on occasion. 4eat? Good question. I guess that'd be one thing I'd like to figure out.

No, they didn't put the 4eat in a Loyale, or any other earlier EA series with the exception of the "fulltime 4wd", turbo cars, and later XT's

Actaully pretty good tranny's. 4wd engages hydraulically, the instant you hit the button, no levers to move, nor vac solenoids or cables.

 

Just slow as beans.

Back in the day when a manual got better mileage then an auto

think your speedo might be off a little though, 4500 is too high for 65. at 65 mph you should be right at 4000 rpm.

 

You can cruise at 65, I've made trips up to canada doing just that speed the entire way. If I'm only on the highway briefly i'll even do 70-80 mph but this is usually only for say 5 to 10 minutes.

 

You keep it at 60-65 you'll get about 270 miles to a tank of gas on the highway.

 

Note: I've never managed to get my loyale to hit 100 mph. Not that you may want to, just a fact. I've hit 97 mph and I was a hair below redline.

My 5 speed GL will do 100 no problems.

 

Make sure your tranny fluid is full btw. Good practice when it's often spinning so fast.

my 3at will not do more than 85, at 5500rpm..and trying to get wheel spin is pointless :-p..i miss my gl-10...

You can't get any wheelspin? In the rain on the boulevard the other day had it chirp and spin into second gear. It made me chuckle haha:banana:

My 3at could burn a tire through first and second... against a tree.

The gas can in the spare tire shelf was the fuel tank, everything had rotted out underneath. There wasn't much salvageable on that car due to rust, but we had some fun with it before junking.

Aside from that being overall good general advice (don't beat your car) I do think it is a bit inaccurate.

 

It is from my own personal and impersonal accounts that our cars can take quite a beating.

 

Not trying to contradict you at all, naturally it's much more advisable to take care of your car than beat it to hell, but I just wanted to attest to the resiliance these cars have when they are indeed beat on.
