short distance towing with a tow bar...any advice?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am going be towing my 86 Brat (with a 5 speed) 16 miles across town using a 2003 Grand Caravan with a UHaul installed hitch.

I am thinking about buying a Walmart tow bar since I need to tow 3 other cars two miles each.

Is a tow bar easy and fairly safe to use?

Can I just put the Brat in neutral and tow it driving slow on city streets? I will not be towing on the freeway.

Should I tie/secure the steering wheel with the steering wheel unlocked so it don't turn too much on turns?

Any advice is welcomed.

If you have an LSD in the rear, pull one of the halfshafts before you tow it.

shouldn't be an issue, other than will tend to make it push around a curve... which could be interesting for the person driving the tow rig...

towing with a tow bar is fine for the old PT 4wds. just be sure to have in Front wheel drive (2wd) mode, and Neutral. you can tow cross-country this way if you want...

But make sure it's attached to the soob properly. I have a towbar that I use that i bolt through the tow hooks...
