June 13, 201213 yr First time posting on here, but I have a 4wd 1990 turbo loyale (automatic) and was wondering if there is anyway to get it to run in 2wd to get a little better fuel efficiency during the summer???
June 13, 201213 yr not really. there is a fuse holder in the engine bay to disconnect the transfer clutches (power only goes to the front), but all the moving parts are still there, and releasing the transfer clutches is done with more hydraulic pressure, so you won't see any change in mileage, just a loss of traction. You could actually remove the rear axles, diff, and rear section of the driveshaft, but that would still only make for marginal gains. Not worth the work, IMO. Ditch the auto if you want to improve your mileage.
June 13, 201213 yr Actually, I'm pretty sure that it should be in 2WD all the time, except for when you push in the button to actuate the 4wd. I'm 99 percent sure you don't have an all-wheel drive Loyale. It's an automatic? There should be a red button on the side of the shifter. When you push it in, that engages the 4WD. when it's not pushed in, it's 2 wheel drive. Do not drive with your car in 4 wheel drive unless you are in mud or snow or saturated wet roads. If you drive in 4WD on dry pavement, you are going to break something. If I'm mistaken and this IS an all-wheel drive Loyale then disregard what I said, and the above poster's response applies.
June 13, 201213 yr I went RWD and I get better gas mileage than 4WD and am MUCH more fun to drive than FWD

Turbo Loyales would have come with the AWD 4EAT just like the EJs.
