Subaru Lingo. EJ22, EJ25, EA81-82 ?

Featured Replies

I havn't yet figured out the Subaru acronyms, so I'll ask a rookie question. :D

I get the engine designation 2.2 and 2.5, but need help on other designations, can someone point me to a page?

a quick and no doubt limited run down:

EA engines are old school Subarus: XT, GL's, Loyale's, RX, Brats, all the old school Subaru's. 70's - early 90's stuff.

EJ engines are found in Impreza, Legacy, Forester, Baja. from 1990 - roughly current.

ER27 and EG33 are one model engines for the XT6 and SVX. The ER27 is very similar to EA engines - same pistons, valves, etc, just two more cylinders.

the numbers following the letters are the size of the motor. EJ22 is a 2.2 liter, etc.

EZ are the 6 cylinder motors used in 2001+ Subaru Outbacks and Tribecas.

also, EA

EA-71 1.6l OHV

EA-81 1.8l OHV

EA-82 1.8l SOHC (cams on top of heads)

FBXX NEW engines with XX being engine code(new impreza, forester, BRZ etc.)

On the older stuff, a "T" added to the end is turbo

A sticky with acronyms common to this board would be really good for new readers. There are many, some subaru specific, some not. For example:

NA= naturally aspirated (as in not turbocharged)

5MT = five speed manual transmission

4EAT = four speed automatic transmission

SPFI = single point fuel injection

MPFI = multi point fuel injection

SOHC =single overhead cam

DOHC = dual overhead cam

Some I remain confused about:

EJ25D - first edition EJ25 with DOHC?

EJ251 - first edition EJ25 with SOHC?

EJ252 - second edition EJ25 with SOHC?

EJ253 - third edition EJ25 with SOHC?

ej25d - phase 1 2.5 DOHC

ej251 - phase 2 2.5 sohc

1999 EJ25D DOHC shares a EJ251 bottom end, with 52mm rod journals, and are not "prone" to bottom end failure.
