September 22, 201213 yr On my 1996 2.2 legacy, car fax says the timing belt was last replaced at 106000 miles. I know you can't say a timing belt is good just by looking at it.what things should I look for to determine whether or not I should replace my belt?????
September 22, 201213 yr Has it been more than 7 years? Has it been more than 60k miles? If you can answer yes to either one, replace the belt and all idlers and water pump.
September 22, 201213 yr Author ************. Yes to both xD Hey. Um. Is the ej22 interference or not??? Edited September 22, 201213 yr by soobie_newbie67
September 22, 201213 yr ************. Yes to both xDHey. Um. Is the ej22 interference or not??? 96 2.2 is non-interference.
September 22, 201213 yr Well that depends on if it's a 96 model year or a 96 build date. Cars built after 6/96 are 97 model years which are interference. The timing belt spec was upped to 105 a couple years later, so with it having the belt already replaced it should be good to 210k miles. The gamble is whether they replaced the tensioner, idlers and the water pump at 105k, or if they put just a belt on it. The idlers are what commonly fail, so asking them to go 200k is a risk.
September 23, 201213 yr Well that depends on if it's a 96 model year or a 96 build date. Cars built after 6/96 are 97 model years which are interference. I've heard this, but never been able to confirm. I can't find any differences between any of the single port EJ22 heads I've examined. Although I didn't compare Cams in any excact way, they just look the same. Do you or anyone else have some confirmation on the interference aspect? To me it seems they didn't change til the Phase II engines in 99-2001
September 23, 201213 yr Believe me, I've seen enough grenaded '97-98 EJ22s to confirm, they ARE interferential. I forget exactly what they changed (I think one thing is the length of the piston skirt), but that date is correct. Also consider how extreme the climate is: very dry/hot conditions wreak havoc on rubber. Also extremes of hot to cold to hot. Emily www.ccrengines.com
September 23, 201213 yr Apparently they changed the piston crown to boost compression. Removed the recesses for the valves that were in the earlier pistons. I've read that the change was in late 96 or early 97. But nobody seems to know for sure.
September 23, 201213 yr Author Help please. I can't find the build date on my car. I'm used to finding it on the door sticker but it's not there.
September 24, 201213 yr look for the build date on the the sticker on the bottom of the driver door. they put them there for a while. i didn't think the id plate had the build date on it, but it may. but unless you are ordering pistons you don't need it. 97 is an interference engine and the timing belt interval is 60k miles. there is a 105k, california belt, you can use, but eve if it was used last time, were the idlers replaced??? the failure of any part the belt touches will cause valve damage $$$$. change it all now and don't worry about it for 60k miles. replace the timing belt, all the idlers, and the water pump. the 97 should have the old style 2 part tensioner, hydraulic piston and separate idler. the idler should be replaced the piston is probably good. but if it is leaking or not working properly , replace it. you can get good quality parts for a fair price on ebay from ''theimportexperts''. i would re-use the bolts that are on your car. and torque to spec. DO NOT over torque the bolts. Edited September 24, 201213 yr by johnceggleston
September 24, 201213 yr Author Alright. So production date is August 9th 1996 so my engine is interference. Any timing belts kits you guys recommend???
September 24, 201213 yr Post your vin and we will know exactly what year and which engine code it has. Tenth digit of the VIN is the year. If its a 96 model it should be a T.

September 25, 201213 yr Author Engine vin is 3. I got the precise production date through the dealer. He said is interference and so does the production date since after 6/1996
September 25, 201213 yr i must be invisible. maybe i'll go rob a bank or sneak into Angelina Jolie's dressing room.
September 26, 201213 yr Author Yeah. I looked up those import experts guys, but couldn't find the kit. Link please. Thank you.
September 26, 201213 yr Google is your friend. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=370597036231 These guys also have a good timing kit. Comes with oil seals, and an Aisin water pump that comes with an OE style gasket. http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=260925109309
May 2, 201411 yr does anyone have the torque specs handy for the idlers and tensioner? i've never used a torque wrench on those, but there's zillions of FSM's online for free, i'd just get one with the timing belt procedure and hvae it on hand.
