Up/Down vibration

Featured Replies

EA82 wagon, 5 spd. About 45 and 60mph or so, transmission area, steering wheel. Sounds like rear drive shaft....make sense?

Hey,

Start off with getting the tires rebalanced. Typically if they are out of balance in the rear, the seat will vibrate. Steering wheel will vibrate if the front wheels are out of balance. Sounds like they all are out of balance. That wont always fix the problem if the tires are in bad shape. Check fluids in the rear diff and trans, change if necessary. Start there, before looking into anything else.

Well, of course that has all been done. I know, I didnt specify that. :) This is way beyond basic maintenance.

give the drive shaft the old shake test. it shouldnt move much if any.

but i would check your axle nuts also.

more than likely its the carrier bearing.

I am thinking carrier bearing as well. Wonder if you can dissect those and put a new one on, instead of the whole shaft?

If you have been 4 wheeling through mud pits, the mud builds up on the inside of the wheel and stays there until you remove the wheel and clean it. That caked mud can turn you car into a giant vibrator. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Not wheel or tire related.

I am going with the driveshaft on this one, easy enough to find out.
