Tell me a bit about 1994 WRX transmissions

Featured Replies

I'm considering buying a 1994 WRX 5 spd transmission for a swap project, but I'm having a HUGE amount of difficulty finding out anything about it.

It is JDM and from a RHD vehicle.

I'm looking for gear ratio (although I'm guessing it's 3.90), I'm wondering what sort clutch it accepts ( Pull style, push style, hydraulically activated or cable)

Also, is there any reason I might avoid this transmission??

Any help, of info will be greatly appreciated.

if no help here, you might consider searching first, then posting at NASIOC.

(put on your thick skin, but , after the knucklehead comments, someone will be along that can help)

Hydraulic, pull.

1994...main bearings were a problem with the earliest generations of the "new" 5 spd. They tend to rumble and rattle and generally let the mainshaft move around too much after they pass ca. 180,000 km. Also, the lock ring on 5th can go loose after losts of high speed driving in 5th.

However, both are easy to fix, and any gearbox that age will be in need of some TLC. Depending on your facilities, just fit it, and listen for problems. Valvoline TDL 75W-90 is like a liquid magic for Subaru gearboxes, by the way, Get some :-)

Oh, and that is a super cool project!!!

The one I'm considering has about 130000 km. So if it hasn't been bagged, and I can get some hydro clutch parts, this seems like a decent option.

It will also be easy to get some strong clutches for...WRX/Turbo tuning parts are all over the place.

Please post some pictures when you can :-)
