April 17, 200421 yr Unlike GL's, Legacy rear diffs have solid stubs (same spline count) why not stuff spiders and solid stubs into an old gen case and weld up the spiders...
March 28, 200719 yr Is the legacy gear ratio the same as the GL's?I like this idea.... no legacys were 4.111 at least in the 5 speeds. i think the autos were lower. there were imprezas with 3.90 rear ends. and i think the turbo legacys were 3.90 but they were already LSD so are you saying the old GLs dont have spider gears in their open rear ends?
March 28, 200719 yr All diffs have spider gears. They are the little gears that transfer power to the axles. Power comes in from the ring and pinion, into the carrier, then to the cross pin, which goes through the spider gears. The spider gears engage the gears on the stub shafts, driving the axles. In the picture, the green gears are the spider gears.
March 28, 200719 yr Only turbo legacy with a almost certain lsd was the 91, all others are 3.90 open diff. The 90-91 autos were 4.11, as noted in another post, *most* other auto's were 3.90's Also , the diffs bolt holes are the same bewteen new and old gen's I've got a 5spd 4.11 ratio rear end ready to go into the brat when I get my ne d/s made for the swap.
March 28, 200719 yr sry *****dumb question***** what are spider gears? Nothin should be a stupid question around here. If you don't know, and don't ask... how will you ever learn? Keep up the questions dude!
