Exhaust bolt threads

Featured Replies

So awhile back I had a bolt that went in and kind of mangled the threads to the driver side head, so I have a exhaust leak in that area and it's a little annoying how would I go about fixing it?

Thread inserts are what your looking for. The most common brand is called Heli-coil and any autoparts place will have them, but you're gonna need the "kit". It has the install tool, coils and instructions, but I think you need to buy the drill bit separately. If you feel comfortable tapping a hole by yourself go for it, otherwise have someone else give you hand. It sucks if you get it in there a little sideways. Your gonna need to drop the y-pipe too, so don't forget to unplug the O2 sensor, or you may need a new one of those.

NAPA has an excellent selection and most weird sizes.

Timesert/timecert's are newer and seem better but I haven't used them yet.

Infact I'm trying to remember what heli-coils I do have.  Because the kit, and drill bit can get kinda expensive for a one tim euse.

I baby the flex joint behind the Y-pipe anytime I drop a Subaru exhaust manifold.

Thanks a little pricy for the heli-coils but I guess it's good enough for now.. I plan on switching to a EJ22 next year for turbo purposes.
