June 18, 201312 yr HiI have owned my 1996 Legacy TX_S for the past 9 yearsRecently the abs light started to appear on the dashboard when you turn the car on. It does not disappear and is not intermittent.Over the past few days I have tried the followingChecked all fuses- OKChecked brake fluid- topped upChecked the check engine lights - no fault codesRemoved all four abs sensors and cleaned themRead the ABS codes and I get 46ABS fault code 46 does not exist on my table. Can anyone help me with this.I have also reset the fault codes and when I turn the key back on it flashes up 46.Can anyone verify what 46 isThanksNick 0 Quote MultiQuote Edit
June 18, 201312 yr The module will flash a code 11 as a start code before flashing any stored codes. I've checked abs codes before and the module doesn't pause for long between codes. Are you sure you're not getting a code 11, and a code 26? I can't find a code 46 listed anywhere either, but I only have info for US market vehicles. I do see 26, 36, and 56. But no 46.
June 19, 201312 yr ABS is sensitive to system voltage too - maybe give the charging system a thorough check.

Hi Thanks for your help I have checked the fault codes again. It still looks like 46 but I know what you mean..I just posted a short video with 11......46...11.....46. I really can not see any gaps, but there maybe. Let me know what you think. abs fault codes(1).wmv

June 19, 201312 yr I THINK some older ABS pumps used to go bad, but, IIRC, they would 'buzz' all the time. I think the ABS controller had to be replaced. However, my memory associates that problem with models a year or 2 earlier than yours so, I'd reserve replacement for a last-ditch effort.
June 22, 201312 yr Author I have checked the voltage and everything is ok. Also now checked the electrical properties of the g sensor, abs sensors and everything is correct. Still have no idea what is causing the 46 code in the video above. I removed the abs controller from under the dash and everything looks ok. The unit is a 5.3 system Bosch hydraulic unit and nippon abs controller. Does anyone have a pin-out for the connector in this picture. It differs from the service manual. I can not find any info anywhere on it.
June 25, 201312 yr Author 1996 legacy abs.pdfThanks everyone for your help. It turns out abs fault code 46 does exist. The service manual for the 1996 model shows it is a g sensor power fault. I have checked and the sensor is damaged. See manual attached. Cheers Nick
June 25, 201312 yr Thanks for posting that! Ill have to save that section as it is missing from the FSM I have. Glad you found the problem.
June 25, 201312 yr that is a nice document, thanks. where is the G sensor located? i didn't see it listed? i have some ABS codes...and i think 46 may be one of them, i'll have to recheck.
June 25, 201312 yr G sensor is under the center console.you can almost see it through the park brake handle opening. Take the two screws out of the rear section under the arm rest and pull it up, the G sensor is the little box with 3 or 4 wires.
