Are these transmissions interchangable?

Featured Replies

I am trying to replace my transmission with a used one.

My 2000 OBW automatic transmission type is labeled as: TZ1A4ZCABA-WL
2001 OBW "donor" auto transmission type is labeled as: TZ1A4ZCCBA

One letter off (bolded) and no "-WL" from mine. Anyone know if they are interchangeable/compatible? Or where I would look to decode the labels to find out? Could the 8th digit "C" just refer to the year (2001 vs. 2000), a model difference (Base vs. ?) or somehting more ominous?

I guess what I am asking is will his FDR (trans gear ratio) work with my rear diff and TCU? How do I find out if they are the same between cars? I want to do a straight plug and play swap without having to spring for a new rear diff as well.

all OBW 4EAT's should be 4.44 final drive ratio....

but i recall some oddities around 01-02...i can't remember if it's just with base legacy's or OBW's or manuals..i forget but it's right around there that one year has an oddball final drive ratio.

car-parts.com would probably delineate that or show you some good transmission options if you haven't checked yet.

there's a 99 Impreza 4EAT for $300 or so out here a guy is selling but i doubt you're interested, just checking in case you're seeing high prices.  an OBW trans shouldn't cost too much, so don't go crazy on it.

If you are sure they both came from an outback, you're just fine. Outback and Forester were 4.44

The legacy and Legacy GTs and such were mostly 4.11

had to research this one for a while before I swapped a forested trans into the wife's 2000 Outback

the trans will swap.

they are the same.the C vs A (in bold) simply indicates a different, the next, year in the series.

the odd ball outback trans that i am familiar with is in the H6 outbacks.

they have a 4.11 ratio instead of the 4.44 that all other auto outbacks have.

Thanks for the info. My friend is pulling it out of his 2001 OBW Limited and bringing it down Tuesday for the operation.
