Td05 Vs. Vf11

Featured Replies

What are the main differences between these two? Was the TD05 a subaru turbo? or is this an aftermarket piece? I have an opportunity to get a TD05 with a AWIC setup, but im not sure if its worth the trouble from swapping a VF11 for the TD05? I will get the AWIC regardless, and when I do i'd like to increase the boost to somewhere closer to 10psi.

Also, would anyone have pix of the swap?

Thanks guys.

Oh, and this is for a EJ22T in my '92 Legacy SS.

Brian,

I believe that the TD05 is a turbo that came on certain early STi models. It most likely has different flow charactistics than the VF11... whether its a quick spooling turbo, or a high end monster I don't know.

AWIC - Air Water Intercooler... right? Thats so rad. :D

Thanks. Im still kinda Turbo Stupid. I understand the basic principles, and how they operate and understand it all. I just dont wanna go through a full days work and install the TD05 if it's going to increase turbo lag or something.

The AWIC is very cool. Im looking for some radiators for it because the owner doesnt have them. Im looking into ATV radiators.

The TD05 is a Mitsubishi turbo, also known as a 16G. Brian, this turbo is exactly what's on Jason's (or Vikash's) wrecked Legacy :)

The VF11 is an IHI turbo. 91White-T on the BBS has one on the Legacy he's parting out, if he still has it.

I'm turbo-stupid too, I know the basic principles, but I've never worked with turbos, so I can't say which is better. But both would be great upgrades from stock:cool:

The TD05 was a turbo made by mistubishi for Subaru. It was found the 93-96 Impreza wrx and Impreza wrx STi. Grab it if you can, its a badass turbo, good for 350 hp, its laggy, but once spooled pulls to redline. Its much more powerful than a vf 11.

Mark,

the td05-16g is no joke, like legacyT says, theyre capable of 350hp assuming you mod to accomdate it (i.e. fuel, intercooler and ignition).

if you go to the legacy turbo BBS forums, youll find quite a few threads about it...

Im an active member of LegacyCentral's BBS as well. Their crew is great, but I wanted a USMB aspect. Forget NASIOC and IClub, I cant hold a conversation with many of them there.

Anyhow, I really dont need 350hp. I rarely take my car to redline unless im passing some punk kid in his Honda on the way home from work. The VF11 has already gotten me a $250 speeding ticket.

I think i will get the combo, but focus on just installing the AWIC for now. The car is still in need of new rims, and suspension. And I dont have much money to spend on my engine.

Does 91White-T's have the AWIC as well? I think im going to need some pipe for the install.

I thought the stock U.S. legacy turbo was ok in relibility and effincy up to around 10 PSI. If you just want to run that much i wouldent even bother with a new turbo, unless yours is going out.
