Is a 1997 Subaru Legacy GTB ECU compatible with a 1998 Legacy GTB

Featured Replies

am currently looking on trademe for an ECU and im finding ECU's for 98 models that say 4G and ive come across a cheap one that says it came out of a 1997 model but its got 4G .

So  is the 1997 ECU for Subaru Legacy GTB the same as the 98 ?

in the US market - all 1996 - 1999 DOHC EJ25 and 96-98 EJ22 ECU's are interchangeable.

i don't know what 4G means - but it doesn't mean anything in the US...well except that it's an AT&T engine i guess. LOL

the wiring in the 98 outback changes a little, at least in mine.

i bought a 98 OBW with a bad engine, t-belt, and water damage.

when i got the ej22 engine in, i learned the ECU was bad.

i swapped i a 97 obw ecu and the car fired right up.

but it threw a couple of codes.

one was for the ''incorrect flow'' of the evap sysytem.

i assume this was due to the charcoal canister being moved to the rear.

and the other was for a ''traction control'' item which neither car had.

when i finally got the right ECU for the engine, both codes went away.

i also tried a 97GT, and a 96L ecu in the 98 and none of them worked right.

the engine ran fine, but i had phantom codes.

have you tried http://www.car-part.com for a used ECU?

they should be pretty cheap.

they don't fail very often.

and car-part.com searches the entire country and some beyond.

the ecu would be listed under ''computer box engine'', i think.

price range from $15 to $200

we don't get those turbo engines here, completely different in the US so you'll need some NZ informed folks for true interchangeability options.

JCE - good call, that is in regards to the evap stuff moving from the font of the car to the rear i would presume.

Hope you got your problem solved, kenathena.
