83 GL - Sputters & boggy -stall when lightly on gas - Need help

Featured Replies

Just picked up 83 GL, 108K miles. In great shape. Everything works great, runs good, with exception of the sputtering /stalling when starting on gas from a stop, or when at speed and stepping on, it bogs down for a second, then back on again.

Its a drop in power for a second then it kicks in. Does it at stops, and when cruising. I checked for vacuum leak using propane. Did not find any. Also disconnected EGR, no change. Put new fuel filter in, still there.

Looking for help or others with similar issue and what was the fix?

Yes, it has the Carter Weber carb. I've seen that comment on other posts....I'll look into that. Is that accessible outside the carb or an internal component? I'm learning quickly. Thanks

Plugs and plug wires.

Air filter.

Never rule out the simple.

Also, if it has the low of mileage, chances are it sat for some time.

It would hurt nothing to rebuild the carb.

I have had a carter weber 1 bbl in an 83 FWD 5spd with high altitude kit. I found that the base would get loose. You remove the carb, and on the underside of the base plate there are screws into the carb that come loose. i had 'floppy carb' and would have high idles and backfires. Check this as a possibility; use loc tite

its most likely in the carb, depending on what the plugs look like, its probably some gunk in the air bleeds.

Also it worth to check the condition of the PCV Valve, lots of stalling and bogging problems I've solved on EA Engined Subarus, were related to Stuck open PCV valves.

Kind Regards.
