87 gl wagon having some problems

Featured Replies

I just bought a carborated 87 Gl wagon about a week ago and im trying to get it so i can drive it all the time. It runs decent but i am getting bad gas mileage (about 15 MPG) and it idles really high. What is strange is that it idles around 1000 when it is cold and 2200 when warmed up??!! The EGR light is on also. There is no vacume at all going to the egr valve but i cant find a disconected line or a leak. I would appreaciate it very much if anyone could tell me where a common place for a vacume leak is, or if anyone has any suggestions about anything, that would be great. Thanks -Nathan

Just start disconnecting vac lines, and plugging them till you find it. Manifold gaskets are a common leak, as are evap canistors.... might want to rebuild that carb - sounds like it has choke issues.

Spray around the manifold and vac lines with carb cleaner - that *might* find the leak, but sometimes doesn't if the leak is in a weird place.

EGR valve only opens above 2500 RPM's or so.... should be using ported vacuum going through a solenoid, or a thermo-valve.

Check the EGR solenoid (i'm not sure if your car has one, but i think it does). The solenoid is a black tube with 2 wires and 2 vacuum hoses going to it. If the spring inside failed, it could block the vacuum line.

well you could always sell it to me , the 15-17th a few of us are getting togather at my place to do some work, putting a dual range 4wd into a dl 5sp wagon . come on down , send me a private email and i will tell you how to get here .from cleveland about 4hr drive

Try a 10 or 12 mm wrench on the cable to idle it down and open the air filter so it can get more air.
