Transmission swap

Featured Replies

Hello, Will a transmission from a 98 Legacy fit a 02 Forester. They are both automatic 4 speeds. How about one from an 04 Forester.

Electronics changed in 03, so the 04 trans will not work.

The 98 trans has a different bolt pattern to the bellhousing (4 fewer bolt holes) , but will bolt up and plug in, but the final drive ratio will be different because its from a legacy.

Better off to find one from a 99-02 Forester.

Try searching at car-part.com.

Forester electronics changed in '03?

I know on legacys and outbacks in 04 some things changed, but the only diff in the trans itself is they changed the operation of the AWD solenoid and valve (and you can swap over the parts).

I've been trying to get info on when the foresters made that change, and other models.

If you're not in the US - these final drive ratios and year-changes/compatability could be different.

the front diff is integrated into the transmission so the transmission has to come from something with the same final drive ratio.

OR

swap the rear diff and the transmission and you can install *any* transmission and ignore final drive ratio

then it becomes only a matter of compatibility.

98 Legacy 2.5 liter is 4.44 final drive

98 Legacy 2.2 liter is 4.11 final drive

I thought 02 Foresters were 4.44 but maybe it's a 4.11.  All Subaru 4 cylinder non-turbo automatics should be 4.11 or 4.44 final drive ratio.

the 98 is a phase 1 trans,

the 02 is a phase 2 trans,

they will not swap.

the 02 forester will take any 00 - 03 forester, outback (except H6 outbacks) or GT auto trans.

the ratios will match, 4.44, and the wiring will plug in.

legacy L, brighton, or low end impreza will not swap.

they have a 4.11 ratio.

i don't know about WRX or other high end imprezas.

If it will take an '03 outback trans then it should also take an '04, but it would need to have the AWD solenoid and valve swapped over (assuming the H4 outbacks received that change same time as the H6 outbacks)
