May 11, 201411 yr I have read that the seals go bad in Subie P/S pumps. Guess that is my problem. How difficult is it to replace the seals? Is it better to go to a Pull-A-Part yard, and just buy a replacement pump? If so, what year& model Subies would have a compatible pump? Thanks.....Larry (Rooster2)
May 11, 201411 yr I second this question! I just picked up a 96 impreza outback sport that has a leaky power steering pump..
May 11, 201411 yr Many times it's just the o-ring on the top of the pump. It's a Subaru part, at least I have never found one that fit if it was not the Subaru part. They are under a $2 so well worth it. Try that first. If it does not fix the problem then you can either go used or rebuild. The rebuild needs to be done with care. If you can find a good used one that's great, but leaking pumps are the norm.
May 11, 201411 yr It's actually really easy to rebuild these pumps, but most of the time its just the o-ring on the reservoir that leaks. Clean it up and see if you can determine the source of the leak. For a 98 I imagine anything from 95-99 should be the same. Possibly more. Look up your car on opposedforces.com and click the part number for the pump assembly, then click on "Usage Info".
