May 17, 201411 yr What is the best way to bolt the 2.2 in to my 86 wagon? I bolted the legacy mounts to my crossmember and they both cracked on the inside. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
May 17, 201411 yr A few folks have mentioned they use the group N mounts. Not too cheap though.. I'm still debating on whether or not to use the ej mounts, or upgrade to these: Group N "STi" Engine Mounts Stiffer than stock, bolt on item. Add to your Impreza to enhance suspension ride and overall handling.. Price is EACH (2 needed to install)) Fits Model: All Fits Model Year(s): 1990 - 2012 Also Available for Legacy and Forester models! Your Price: $68/each or $131/pair
May 18, 201411 yr First I slotted the holes slightly on the EA cross-member. I used an extra EJ block flipped upside down on the bench to fit a spare EA cross-member to the EJ block. I just used a metal shim cut to size (piece of scrap) and sandwiched between the engine mount and the engine mount bracket. Nothing fancy just wedge something metal in to make up the difference in angle and pinch it down with the bolts. The idea is that the bolts to the engine mount, bracket, and cross-member can all be tightened without any load or stress put on the mounts due to improper angles. In other words take the time to make your adjustments and resist the temptation to just "suck up the difference with the bolts". Tack the spacers in if you have a welder. Also do take the time to fab up a nice sturdy pitch stopper if you haven't already and you should be set with stock mounts for years. Edited May 18, 201411 yr by Crazyeights
May 18, 201411 yr This slotting and shimming, is it to the outside(towards tires) or inside(towards center of xmember) of the engine mounts?
May 18, 201411 yr Outside. After you adjust the angle of the motor mounts so they are correct the studs will splay out slightly more to the outside of the car. I elongated them out about 1/4" each with a carbide burr. Edited May 18, 201411 yr by Crazyeights
May 18, 201411 yr Author Are the group n mounts a direct bolt in or will they also need to be shimmed? They are not much more than the stock ej mounts and I already need to replace both of mine.
May 18, 201411 yr Author Dose the spacer go between the bracket and engine or between the mount and the bracket? I remember thinking that the ej mounts wouldn't sit right on the crossmember. I think it's stamped for a rectangle mount. So I guess I'm trying to span that indentation in the crossmember with the bottom of the round mount and trying to get it as flat as possible?
May 18, 201411 yr I found out that if I put the spacers or shims between the rectangular part of the EJ mount and the cross-member then the studs on the mounts are not long enough for the nuts to go on. I loosened the two nuts that hold the mount to the bracket on each side and shimmed it in there. A picture is worth a thousand words I know, and I don't have one right now. I'll try and post a pic within a few days if it's still not clear. Also you might have to grind off the bumps if you have the round mounts. I have a set of those too but I haven't tried them yet with this setup. Edited May 18, 201411 yr by Crazyeights
May 19, 201411 yr I made a post on the forum about this somewhere but I can't seem to find it. I didn't have to widen the crossmember hold it all I just used a quarter inch piece of flat stock i put it on the inside part of the engine mounts closest to the oil pan I will post a picture in a minute or two

May 19, 201411 yr Author Is the pitch stopper the bar that goes to the firewall If so yes I have one. I had to trim the bracket a little to get it to fit the way I wanted it. I may end up needing to build a stronger one. What motor mounts are those in the pic? I have round ones out of a 90 Legacy. I just need to take the weight off the mounts and fill that void?
May 19, 201411 yr Author Thanks so much for all the friendly advice! I have had many cars and many motorcycles but this is my first Subaru. I have fallen in love with this car. I am so anxious to get it going with the new engine. I have done some over due maintenance on the car so I hope it's going to feel like a completely different machine. Thanks again.
May 24, 201411 yr I did my wedges like this: It's upside down due to making them on the engine stand with the cross member on top of the up side down engine Make a wedge for each side.CheersBennie
