Is there any big difference between the green-colored coolant and the other ones?  My Dad bought a jug of yellow (Shell, I think) stuff and I was wondering if it's ok to use...

Green - normal

 

Orange - dexcool

 

Gold - universal

 

Never mix green and orange, gold is good for both colors

There are many differences in coolants, even if they're the same color. Kinda have to look at the label pretty carefully to figure out what's actually in the jug.

Subarus are pretty picky about coolant. Using the wrong kind can cause corrosion and high amounts of silicate dropout which can clog the radiator and heater core.

 

Peak Brand is supposedly safe to use.

 

Th green stuff you can use but you have to remember to change it every two years.

Sez it's ethylene glycol based...

Oh I get it...you just can't mix them...

Apparently so-called 'Japanese green' is a deeper green and contains no silicates and just phosphates.

 

 

It seems like that's what's in there now...or maybe it's just dirty from additives or wear....

I've used many different Coolants with Different Colours all long these years, and in my own humble opinion, the only one that provides a noticeable but slightly "Lower Temps" Results in overheating cars, is the Blue; Shellzone Blue.
