Hey now! I'm stumped. Someone probably knows what's going on, but its not me! I just put new head gaskets in my '82 wagon. Got every thing all clean, & had the heads resurfaced. Put new gaskets all around, and torqued every thing correctly. Filled the fluids, and tried to start it. Some oil spoofed out of the filler, so I went to let a little out, and water started pouring out of my oil drain. I could understand a little water left over,but this was clean, new water I had just put in the radiator, and like, all of it. After a whole catch pan, plus some, it is now back to spoogie oil. I'm sure I messed something up, but I have no idea where to even start looking. There's no visible leaks on the out side that I've noticed. Any thoughs on this ?

my guess is one of your gasket repairs failed....

Something was either missed, forgotten, or totally screwed up when you did the HG.

I would vote this.  Assuming this is an EA81, I had the exact same problem with my BRAT motor.

It is an ea81. Where do I find the freeze plug?

in the heads under the rocker shaft - 19mm probably have to get it from the dealer

first 1st things first - you just replaced head gaskets - why ??

 

Buttermilk ?

 

Did the gaskets get a look over for failure ?

 

a good way to see if the freeze plug, named after the Welch brothers, is the cause, will be to remove your rocker covers and fill radiator again and observe plugs carefully for water seep.

 

I reckon they are 20mm if it is EA81. 3 per side.

 

Had exact same thing going on in my sump on new oil EA82 a few years back. You just need to remember shipping disasters at sea - oil floats on water. So, before you make a mockery of "oil an water don't mix" by adding pressure and heat to make buttermilk out of the two - you will find removing sump plug water or coolant will be first out, followed my non- mixed- with- water- yet oil.

 

A good machine shop would check your freeze plugs condition. Some have been found to be stainless from factory so don't rust through.

 

If the inlet manifold gasket is not water tight, it can seep down inlet tract and sometimes seep beyond rings into sump, but most likely fill cylinders to get hydralock - so think you can rule this out
