12V accessory plug is dead

Featured Replies

When going to charge my cell phone today I realized that the 12V lighter plug in our 2005 OBS doesn't work (tried 2 different working cell phone chargers). Never one of these go bad before- unlikely it's got its own fuse. Any other likely culprits or can you just buy another plug and wire it in?

In my outback, power mirrors are the only other thing on that fuse. I'd start with checking the fuse...

Check fuse first. Could have had a penny dropped in it at some point and blew the fuse.

Thank you all. I'll definitely check the fuse- hopefully that simple. Hasn't worked int he 6 months that we've the car, so maybe the PO did short it out somehow and never replaced the fuse.

well, there is a 'general' fuse but, on the back of the port itself, there is a fuse/overheat cut-out so, the fuse in the fuse block could be good and still have a dead port. Probably have to remove the port from the trim and replace it.

Ugghhh... It was actually the phone charger after all. Did check the fuse and it was good.

I made a cheap light bulb tester for those sockets. It's a cheapo plug and a 194 wedge bulb socket from the auto parts store. Plug it in and if the light comes on then its getting power. If the light blinks or comes on when I wiggle the plug some the socket is cruddy and needs to be cleaned/replaced.
