August 27, 201411 yr Just bought an EJ22 yesterday. Single port heads. EGR. Is there a serial number or something I can look up/ bring to a dealer? Otherwise, what traits would identify the year of the engine? Like I said it's a phase 1 with single port heads.
August 27, 201411 yr On the passenger side of the block back by the bell housing, there should be a smooth spot with a vin number on it. 10th digit will dictate what year it is. Not all engines have them for whatever reason but most of the 90s stuff does from what I've seen.
August 27, 201411 yr single port heads is going to be 96 - 98, maybe 99 - 01 if phase 2 . if the vin does not pan out, remove a valve cover, ''bolt and lock nut'' valve adjusters means 97 - 98. no valve adjusters means 96 w/ HLAs spark plug tubes through the valve covers means 99 - 01.
August 28, 201411 yr +1^ to all of the above. There is a third alternative. Look inside the oil filler cap. It has a year of mfg in it. This is an item that is very seldom lost or replaced, though the possibility exists. O.
August 28, 201411 yr Author So... '97? Should also mention that due to my lack of engine hoist its stuck in my Outback for a few days until I can borrow my buddy's. Surprisingly I got about 20 mpg hauling it around today. Feels like Im doing a wheelie everywhere... Well as you can see by the pic, its right on top of where the vin should be. Also, are oil pans the same on all years of EJ22? Want to get it covered up sooner than later. EDIT- Sorry non-mobile viewers, the pics are sideways when I upload them here. I cant figure out computers for the life of me, so... Sorry 'bout that.... Edited August 28, 201411 yr by pginter96
August 28, 201411 yr You should be able to see the VIN stamping from the back seat area. It's on the side of the bellhousing, up a little from the bottom stud. That is definitely 96-98 though by the valve covers. The oil cap could be accurate in saying it's a 97/98 motor, or it could have been swapped at some point. Either way as far as gaskets and such go there is no difference in these years, and yes any ej22e oil pan will work. You can even use an ej25 oil pan as long as you swap the pickup tube and remember that it will hold about a half a quart more oil each change. Edited August 28, 201411 yr by 86BRATMAN

Lifted the engine as much as I could (until a bolt went through the mat and deck lid underneath into the "smugglers area"). Saw some flat spaces but couldnt find a VIN. I would flip the engine upright but not without an oil pan.
August 28, 201411 yr Pull one of the valve covers and check it the lash adjusters. If it has hydraulic adjusters its a 96. 97-98 have screw type adjusters.
October 7, 201411 yr Author theres a serial number or something on the drivers side of the block. its hard to see and upside-down, but it looks like it says 895966
October 8, 201411 yr That is the serial number for the engine. The vin is on the flat space in your picture. You have to clean it thoroughly. It looks like the old dot matrix print. O.
October 8, 201411 yr on the edge of the bell housing between the guide pin and the engine stand bolt. two flat spots on the passenger side of the block. no numbers... screw type adjusters 96 - 98 ej22 SOHC. with single port exhaust. Edited October 8, 201411 yr by johnceggleston
