       Trying to figure out if a Impreza transmission will swap to a Legacy.

 

Donor:  1993 Impreza AUTOMATIC / Front wheel drive only / 1.8 EJ18

 

To:    1991 Legacy AUTOMATIC / Front wheel drive only / 2.2  EJ22 

 

   Are the flywheel covers the same on the EJ18 as the EJ22 in this year vintage?

 

  Would the electrical connectors be the same?

It will all be the same. Just make sure your final drive ratio is a match.

  With it being 2WD I would think any final drive would be OK, as it doe not have to match the rear diff. But wiring should be ok?

Ha! Missed that. Then yeah, everything should be identical. Throw it in there and drive.

There may be 23 splines on the impreza axle and 25 on the legacy. You would have to swap axles if so. Otherwise it should be a direct bolt in. FWDFTMPG

My memory may be incorrect, but I think it's only the fwd 5mt impreza that has 23 spline axles. All the phase 1 tranys have the same electrical connections that I've seen. You should be good to go.

  The ej18 and the ej22 have the same rear engine cover..... right??

I have no experience with the ej18 as far as the flex plate goes. If it doesn't you can use the torque converter from the ej18 trans on the ej22 trans.

engine and trans will bolt up just fine

 

the EJ18 intake manifold/TPS sensor (which the transmission uses info from) are way different than the EJ22 electronically.

i'm not sure if that matters...i'd guess it doesn't matter - but clarify that...

 

instead of swapping the torque converter - you can also swap the flexplate.  i've got an EJ25 flexplate on my EJ18 - so you can definitely bolt your EJ18 flexplate to your Ej22.

i'd guess the torque converters are interchangeable, but just a guess. someone recently saw different torque converters (i'm wondering if it was me on my 03 AT frankentrans this summer?).
