1991 Loyale clicking noise (not axles)

Featured Replies

Hey Folks -- my Loyale wagon is making me a little crazy (and a little poorer) these days.  There has been a clicking noise coming from the front end for about a year.  While the noise is similar to that made by worn CV joints, it can't be the CV joints because both axles have been replaced in the last 2 years and the noise only seems to occur when the car is running down the road in pretty much a straight line.  Up until recently the noise would go away after about 10 minutes of driving.  What is even stranger is if I have a passenger, I don't hear any clicking at all.  I thought it might be a wheel bearing but I can't find even the slightest play in either front wheel.  Is my tranny (manual) about to self destruct?

Could still be an axle. Does it only happen while you are accelerating? Outer joints make the loud clicking noise while turning. The inners can make a quieter clicking while accelerating in a straight line, and is more evident when the axles are cold. Not saying is definitely the axles but could be

I agree that its likely the axle. I just put in a set of reman axles from NAPA and experience the clicking in straight line only especially when cold.

There has been allot of attention on the forum about how crappy allot of replacement axles are. 2 years is definitely long enough for sub par axles to fail, spoob I replaced mine with some from autozone and they started clackin within a month. Where did you get the axles from?

The older axle, which was installed just about 2 years ago, was purchsed from NAPA and was supposedly the best on the market (which is not saying much).  And yes Subaru Nut, it only happens on acceleration.  You could be right about it being the inner joint.  I know the noise is coming from the driver side which has the older axle but I'm almost certain it isn't coming from the outer joint.  That's why I was wondering if it was coming from the tranny.

I had an annoying clicking from an axle.  Could not find the problem until I replaced the axle and discovered the old one was the wrong type, even though it fit.  Once the correct type of axle was installed -- all quiet.

Make sure they installed the correct type of axle for the vehicle.
