91 legacy external filter mod

Featured Replies

This mod is for the 91 legacy's with the tsb for the external filter. The reason I didn't just change the old filter out was because I couldn't easily get the OEM filter and after personal experience with after market filters I got fed up with it.

So my solution was to replace the OEM filter with this

This is a home heating oil filter that I bought at the local hardware store for around $27. This filter has a replaceable element that costs around $8 and is available through the hardware store that I bought it from.

I already know what you are thinking, this is going to be just as problematic as the after market filters. Its not though it works really well and coupled with an external cooler

It saved the transmission on my customers car. This filter is bigger and is more of a conventional style filter so it seems to last about the same as the original magnetic filter, but adds about a quart of capacity to the transmission. Its also way easier to change than the original filter as well since I relocated it to a better spot

This is really a simple mod that anyone can do, all together it cost right around $100 in parts. The parts are comprised of 10' of 3/8ths high pressure fuel hose, the home heating oil filter, a couple of hose barbs, the oil cooler, and a quart of transmission fluid.

This Will most definatly extend the life of the transmission its installed on.

So you think that will take care of my torque bind in My girlfriends 91 legacy?

glad it works but, seems like a lot of hassle/$$$ compared to ordering a filter on-line. Is the filter rare or out-of-stock everywhere?

EDIT: OK, seems like there was some kind of kit that was discontinued, but the filter itself seems to be available; http://subarupartsforyou.com/search/31099AA091

I wasn't aware that you could order it online, but the bulk of the cost is cooler and high pressure lines and that's just because of where I put it.

Of course if you are changing the filter a lot like I was in this car it pays for itself fairly fast

yeah, that filter kit is kind of an "obsolete" thing these days since it was meant for the first gen Legacys and they are now 20 plus years on - my 1990 has one...

That someone has come up with a viable alternative to that filter kit is great!

Only problem I see with the location is: if you have a car with ABS, it isnt gonna work in that spot.

True, but the nice thing is, you can put anywhere you want on the car
