99 Forester Automatic

 

 

 Apparently when I plugged the tranny cooler lines back in I didn't get one hose clamp down tight enough, it was one of the original Subaru types with the screw and washer deal, or I just forgot to tighten .

 

Car stopped moving on exit ramp....   There is still a tad bit of fluid showing on dipstick though.

 

 

If I dump fluid back in like it should be what do you think the probabilities are that things will still be functional?

Any other additives that you would suggest supplementing with, LUCAS or other wise?

 

Thoughts??

Can't hurt to try.  Depends on how long it was run low on fluid.

Well I think I might have lucked out.

 

Had to put in nearly 6qts. From what I can research it holds around 10qts with torque converter and all.

 

There must be somewhat of a safety check in the transmission for when it gets so low, car wouldn't move at all.

That was a $50 screw me mistake. O)

And yeah, I neglected to tighten one hose clamp. Darn idiotic human.

I've done a similar thing to a car, I changed the fluid and drove it around the block (probably 1-2 miles) I ended up not going anywhere about 3/4 of the way through the trip. Pushed it back, added fluid, ran fine afterwards. If you completely run out of fluid and weren't driving it at like 3 qt. for a very long time, minimal damage will be caused to the transmission (that doesn't make it a good thing though...)

Seems to shift fine now, not really any different then before, maybe slightly better if anything. THANK GOD!

Fast leak is safer than a slow leak.

 

When pressure on the clutches falls they can slip and burn, when pressure fails altogether there isn't enough friction for them to hurt themselves.

In my experience the trans has to lose almost a gallon of fluid to have trouble moving.

I believe this to be what happened, seems like the best way things could have happened for the situation.

consider it a partial fluid flush.
