January 19, 201511 yr This is our first Automatic Subaru, 95 Legacy LS. There is a ATF light that blinks on start up of the car, then goes out. I think it blinks maybe six or seven times. Anyone tell me what this is? Normal? Abnormal......? Trans seems to work fantastic, love the 4:11 ratio. Thanks, Mark
January 19, 201511 yr There is a code stored for a transmission fault. Do a search for how to read transmission codes via handshake method. Will determine exactly which one you have. If you turn in slow hard circles does the tranny bind? O.
January 19, 201511 yr Author will look for the handshake method in a few min and get the code when the car gets home tonight. No bind in small slow circles.

January 20, 201511 yr FYI: the handshake'' method does not work for odb2 cars. you have to use the 6 pin diagnostic connector under the dash. ground out the correct pin and the ART Temp light will flash the code number. key on, engine off, foot on the brake???????
January 20, 201511 yr Author OK now that I know that 95's are OBDll I am going to take the car to a friend that has just bought a scan tool for his shop that should read the code. I am leaning toward the speed sensor right now. I noticed that when I come up to a stop the speedo jumps up to 30 mph and then starts to drop to zero.
January 20, 201511 yr The transmission codes do work via handshake on ODBII cars. I have used the method on my '03.
January 21, 201511 yr The transmission codes do work via handshake on ODBII cars. ok, but i doubt it is the ''handshake'' for the 1st gen legos where you are required to press the ''power'' button. since only 1st gens have a power button. is the procedure below the one you used? if not , what did procedure did you use? 00-04 How to Read AT Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) - Subaru Outback - Subaru Outback Forums regardless, an obd2 scanner will not read the TCU codes. January 21, 201511 yr Right- I didn't read the whole procedure and didn't read the 'power button' part, its the later handshake you linked to- and I may have though the 'handshake' referred to was for the TCU, not ECU. Edited January 21, 201511 yr by CNY_Dave
