JesZek, I have read through the amazing write up you did about improving your BumbleBeast's suspension.  Awesome job and thanks for posting it on USMB!!  My wagon suspension is completely stock, tired, and needs updating.  I need to do the work myself and want to keep the costs as low as I can.  I want the rear extra strong because on my trips the wagon and the roof are fully loaded and I want to put a motorcyle on a hitch. 

 

1)What front and rear suspension combinations would mount easiest, be strong, and not expensive if I bought them new instead of getting them from a wrecking yard (because they might be tired and old too) ? 

2)What would you recommend?

3)Do I need to replace coils and shocks, do the coils really matter?

4) Anyone ever mounted two shocks on each side in the rear of a wagon, is that possible?

 

I haven't done anything yet and I am trying to get the parts and any difficulties figured out before I start so the project comes together well.  Thanks JesZek and anyone who can offer help or??  Cheers.

 

Also, I will probably be adding 15 inch Toyota/ Honda/ etc. redrill wheels or PUGS so I can buy actual "offroad" tires.  I would likely keep my set of wagon wheels too.

what sort of weight are you planning to add? Sounds excessive. Also looks like you are yet to learn the task the spring coils and shocks do - just as well you ask and plan before expecting too much of the light weight 4wd subie

Without any Doubt, I recommend what I've done, to use the Toyota 4Runner / Land Cruiser Shock absorbers + Honda Accord Coil Springs, as I did, in fact my beloved Subaru "BumbleBeast" has many years and many thousands of thousands of miles with that Setup, and despite that the car feels a little Hard when it is unloaded, I will Never ever go back to the soft and bouncy stock suspension.

 

Now the car handles way much better with Heavy Loads and always feels much more Sportier.

Of course you'll need to change Shock Absorbers and Coil Springs.

 

The Coil Springs are the part that matters the Most, because it is directly the part that Bears with the Load, and thus means that makes the car to be Bouncy or Hard, while the Shock Absorber only limits the vertical movement.

Hi jono, probably 500 lbs in the rear and back seats plus an average enduro type dirt bike's weight on the rear end.  That would be an estimate of the weight.  I'm not exactly sure, but just thinking about this.  I need to have the suspension redone and rather than replacing with stock items which may be the same or more money than the parts JesZek has explained he used and is satisfied with.  Thanks for the feedback, if you think of anything more, let me know.  Cheers
